O'Malley's Tallies: Week 9: Heating up in the Desert

It is now two years in a row in which we have both an undefeated and winless team at the halfway point. If you are a Titans fan, congratulations and good luck on Sunday vs. a skilled opponent in the Chicago Bears. If you are a Lions fan, well…ahhh…Go Red Wings???? After another great week of America’s most popular sport, let’s get to this week’s version of “O.T’s”! On a side note, is it REALLY about to be week 10 already!?!?!

STUDS

1. Kurt Warner – If you would have asked me at the beginning of the year which team would have basically clinched their division after the first week of November, the Arizona Cardinals would have surely been one of the last teams on that list. However, after a big win in St. Louis on Sunday, the Cards are now 5-3 and hold a whopping three game lead over the Seahawks, 49ers, and Rams. A big reason for this has been the ageless wonder Kurt Warner, who threw for an impressive 342 yards and two TD’s in the team’s 34-13 drubbing of the Rams…

2. Tim Hightower – while we are on the Cardinal’s bandwagon, I might as well mention their new starting running back Tim Hightower. After weeks of being Edgerrin James’ touchdown vulture, this rookie from the University of Richmond looks like he has officially overtaken Edge as the team’s feature back going forward. On the day, Timmy carried the rock 22 times for 109 yards including a 30 yard touchdown run vs. those Rams. With numbers like this going forward, you can guarantee #34 is going to be my keeper next year as a 15th round pick!!

3. Adrian Peterson – Although many A.P. owners began to worry in the beginning of the year about a Sophomore slump, these fears have definitely been put to rest as of late. After amassing 139 yards and a TD on the ground vs. a red hot Texans team, Peterson helped keep his slow starting squad in the NFC North race at 4-4 with a big win at home.

4. Matt Ryan – In a game Sunday at Oakland that featured two top 5 quarterbacks of the past few years, Matt Ryan definitely had upper hand all day long. Going up against Jamarcus Russell and the Raiders, this Boston College rookie continued to show a ton of poise and confidence as he threw for 220 yards, 2 touchdowns, and had a QB rating of 138.4. After the Michael Vick saga, a player of Ryan’s ability and character is definitely just what the doctor ordered for Arthur Blank and the Falcon’s organization.

5. Peyton Manning – After last week’s tough defeat to the division leading Titans, questions were beginning to mount about whether or not Peyton had begun to lose his edge as quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. After completing 72% of his passes and throwing 254 yards with 2 touchdowns vs. New England on Sunday night, the old #18 that we all know so well came back into play. In a must win game for the Colts vs. the defending AFC Champions, Peyton was able to get his team a big W and provide much needed comfort for fantasy owners that were beginning to lose faith in one of their top picks this past year.

DUDS

1. Oakland Raiders – 10 NET PASSING YARDS!?!?! Is this the University of Navy football team or an NFL franchise!?!? The whole organization should be ashamed of themselves after an absolute disgraceful performance vs. the aforementioned Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons. With fans becoming restless, a coaching staff in disarray, and locker room cancers like Deangelo Hall waiting around every turn, you must truly be desperate to start any Oakland Raider player going forward in your league (with the exception of any leagues that allow you to a start a punter!)…..

2. Jason Campbell – Due in part to last night’s game, I unfortunately had to suffer the worst defeat in all of my years playing fantasy football. Up 19 points going into MNF and only having to go against Pittsburgh defense, I foolishly figured I would be victorous and had nothing to worry about with the smart and efficient Jason Campbell at the helm. WRONG!!! After being sacked 8 times and throwing his first 2 interceptions of the year, Campbell will officially go on my hate list going forward in the Skin’s 23-6 loss to the Steelers on Monday night. Unable to get into the endzone despite a number of trips into Pittsburgh’s territory, Campbell looked mortal again and the Steelers may have given future opponents the recipe to stop the red hot Skins going forward…

3. MJD/Fred Taylor – What is going on with the Jaguars????? For the life of me, I can not figure out how a team so talented and physical can struggle this bad this year. Going into a game vs. the winless BUNGALS, the two headed monster from last year of Taylor and Jones-Drew only combined for 15 carries for 45 yards in the team’s 21-19 loss. While this just may be a simple bad game for MJD, Fred Taylor is quickly beginning to show his age and heading towards fantasy irrelevance. It is definitely safe to drop Freddy in 10 team leagues and almost time to do the same deeper leagues as well…

4. Brandon Marshall – After watching the entire game between the Dolphins and Broncos on Sunday, I was in shock how immature and childish Brandon Marshall can act when he is not getting the ball. Reminiscent of a younger Terrell Owens, Marshall was both physically and mentally SHOT Sunday vs the Fish. With Joey Porter jawing in his ear the entire game as well as Will Allen and Andre Goodman not giving him an inch of space, Marshall was only able to haul in 2 catches for 27 yards on the day. While Marshall is still a PPR monster and will be a top 5 receiver the rest of the way, owners should take note of what physical corners can do to #15 and hope his actions won’t get the best of him while he is on the field…

UNTIL NEXT TIME!!!!
