This week the Tour heads to PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida for the Honda Classic. PGA National is a Par 70 course that was recently revamped by Jack Nicklaus.
I want to take this opportunity to officially hop on the Rory McIlroy bandwagon. I have liked this 19-year-old’s game for a while now and he is absolutely on fire. Last week, I picked him as a sleeper in the Accenture Match Play Championship and he did not disappoint; winning 3 matches before running into eventual champion Geoff Ogilvy. McIlroy is still unproven at this point, but his high level of confidence makes him a good pick this week (and a very fun player to watch).
My fantasy pick to win this week is Ernie Els. PGA National was kind to the South African last year when he won this tournament. Ernie has two top 10 finishes already this year and played very well last week in the Accenture Match Play Championship. Look for Ernie to be in the mix on Sunday.
If you want a sleeper, look to Mark Calcavecchia. He finished 4th here last year at PGA National. In addition, he won this tournament in 1987 and 1998, but both were on other courses; not PGA National. Mark is also a hometown favorite so he should get some extra support from the fans this week. He went to the University of Florida and the course is in his backyard. He is definitely worth a look this week.
