First to Third: Game Streaming Takes a Step Forward

Monday's Sports Business Journal brought word of an agreement between the YES Network (the Yankees' regional sports television network) and Cablevision to stream Yankee games online for current Cablevision customers that subscribe to the YES network. This agreement marks the first time an MLB team has attempted to stream their games online without going through MLB.tv.

This agreement is part of the YES Network renewal on Cablevision and the proposal would make the games available on Yankees.com, YESNetwork.com, and Cablevision's own OptimumOnline.com. There would be some sort of fee, perhaps embedded in Cablevision customers' bills, or possibly seperate all together.

Fans familiar with MLB.tv know that MLB won't let you stream a game being broadcast in a team's home television market and the Yankees/Cablevision agreement enables fans in the home media market to watch a game online. While an important step forward for baseball on the internet in home television markets, if the agreement applies to Cablevision subscribers only, it would just be another way for fans to access what they already pay for. Stay tuned to First to Third for more details as they become available.
